The "Yellow Rose of Texas" is probably best known for its Zoo, Museum of Art and the Wonderland Amusement Park. The culture of the city revolves mostly around western and cowboy culture, and visitors can sample the lifestyle at the River Breaks Ranch. Other major culture attractions in Amarillo include the Bivins Home and the Don Harrington Discovery Center.
History
Founded in 1887, Amarillo was an early center for the railroad system, a feature
that is spotlighted at the Amarillo
Railroad Museum. The system made transportation of nearby cattle easy, and
the city soon grew into a marketing center. After the depression of the 1930s,
the city boomed into a major industrial producer, with major manufacturers opening
plants in the immediate area, such as Owens-Corning and Tyson Foods.
